When planning the menu for Thanksgiving, we all have the same traditional sides. Well, we asked Chef Wally for ideas on how to spice up the menu and make the sides the star of the meal. Check out what Chef had to say:
Mashed Potatoes – Here are a few ways to add some kick to your potatoes
Stuffing is an easy one to jazz up. Start with your normal stuffing recipe but think about mixing in apple sausage stuffing, cranberry sausage stuffing, or mixing in walnuts and pecans. Using fresh spices from your local grocery store or farmers market rather than dried spices from a jar will make a difference in flavor too.
Green bean casserole can be boring, but not anymore! Add red potato and bacon to the casserole for more flavor. Also adding nuts like shaved almonds, chopped walnuts or pecans can really liven up the dish. For those that like spicy food adding Sriracha to the dish will add some heat.
You can’t forget the dessert! Pumpkin Pie doesn’t need to be the same old plain Jane. Consider adding a pecan Streusel to the top of the pie for a 2 for 1 pie-extravaganza. Everyone loves cheese cake, so why not make a pumpkin cheese cake this year or even add booze and make a bourbon version. If you make fresh whip cream, mixing liquor in will provide lots of extra flavor.
From all of us at Hotel Marshfield, we wish you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving!
